Rehan Huda, M.A. - Chief Executive Officer

Rehan has over 20 years of experience in investment banking, entrepreneurship, and corporate finance. He has helped structure and fund a number of leading edge companies in the biotechnology and information technology space. He has been a guest speaker on finance at a variety of conferences and universities across Canada and internationally. .

Mr. Huda held various positions within the Canadian federal government including Senior Economist for the Department of Finance and Senior Analyst for the Natural Resources and Industry Departments. He was a recipient of the Canadian government’s Public Service Award of Excellence for his financial and economic analysis related to the awarding of operating licenses to wireless telecommunication service providers.

Sarwat Anwer, CPA, CA – Chief Financial Officer

Sarwat has over 6 years of executive management leadership including working as the Chief Financial Officer of a full service Canadian investment brokerage. In addition to her operational management experience, Sarwat has extensive experience in completing investment banking due diligence and financings, financial reporting and regulatory compliance.  Prior to this role, she worked within the Tax & Treasury department of GlaxoSmithKline Inc., has several years of audit and tax advisor experience with KPMG LLP in Toronto and has successfully completed Parts I & II of the CPA In-Depth Tax Course. Sarwat also has experience completing annual regulatory filings with the SEC through her role as consultant CFO for a US publicly listed healthcare company.


Robert Leaker, B.Sc., B.Eng., P-Eng., MBA – Chief Operations Officer

Robert Leaker has made a career out of leading start up operations. He has started up business lines in retail branching, mortgages, wealth and insurance for Meridian Credit Union and CIBC. Prior to banking, he worked in the Petro-chemical industry launching numerous innovations in the utility, wastewater treatment and refining processes before moving into retail franchise operations management for Petro Canada. With his diverse background in science, engineering, retail operations and financial services, he has the unique ability to build cross-functional teams of highly skilled professionals from sciences, business, finance and sales.

Paul Carpanini, MBA, CFA – VP Corporate Business Development

Paul is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and an MBA graduate from the Schulich School of Business. Formerly from the areas of Corporate Business Development and mergers and acquisitions at Sun Life, committed to help uncover new specialized markets and niche opportunities to grow the business.

Dr. Elizabeth Matthews, PhD – Head, Scientific & Regulatory Affairs

Dr. Elizabeth Crump is a microbiologist with 18 years experience in fish pathogens and vaccine development, including 10 years in industry with 3 years as a Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs Manager for Pfizer. Responsible for QA review, inspection coordination and all communication with government regulatory agencies, Dr. Crump is experienced in navigating complex regulatory frameworks and upholding best-in-class quality standards.

Serge E. Vidalis, CD, MA – Chief Security Officer

Serge E. Vidalis is a retired Officer of the Royal Canadian Navy’s Special Operations branch where he served in various strategic and tactical positions in Canada and overseas. His distinguished public service career also included five years of service as a police officer in British Columbia and fulfilling several Board of Director duties on various justice committees and community boards. Serge’s work in strategic security, risk management and protective services span over 30 years, including the last 20 years as the President and CEO of several Canadian and US firms. Serge holds a Master of Arts degree in Conflict Analysis and Management, and is a doctoral scholar in the area of national security and counterterrorism.

Dr. William Kay, PhD – Chair
Professor Emeritus at the University of Victoria, Dr. William Kay is a an experienced Biochemist/Molecular Biologist with over 200 publications and  patents.  A successful biotechnology entrepreneur and start-up specialist in pharmaceuticals and biologicals, Dr. Kay recently served as President and CEO of Microtek International until its sale to Pfizer in 2010. He currently serves on three biotechnology boards.



Dr. Robert (Bob) Hancock, PhD
Dr. Bob Hancock OC, OBC, FRSC is a professor of Microbiology & Immunology at UBC and a Canada Research Chair holder. He heads the UBC Centre for Microbial Diseases Research. He has published more than 600 papers and reviews, and has 44 patents awarded. He has won numerous awards for his research, including the Prix Galien 2012 Research Award, widely considered the most prestigious honour in Canadian pharmaceutical research and innovation, and the 2001 Aventis Award, the worlds top prize for antimicrobial discovery. In 2001 he was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Canada. He is a Founder of Migenix, Inimex, ABT Innovations and the Centre for Drug Research and Development, and has served as a Scientific Advisory Board Member or consultant with 30 Biotech and Pharmaceutical Companies.

Dr. Peter Jewesson, PhD, ACPR, FCSHP
The first Canadian PhD in Clinical Pharmacy, Dr. Jewesson was a professor at UBC for 20 years while cross-appointed to Vancouver Hospital where he co-directed the Pharmaceutical Sciences Clinical Service Unit. He was also appointed to the Department of Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases, and implemented one of Canada’s first hospital drug use evaluation/optimization/cost containment programs. He has over 140 refereed publications and has received several provincial and national awards for his research. He joined Qatar University in 2006 to establish this country’s first and only College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Gregor Reid, PhD, MBA, ARM, CCM, Dr. HS, FCAHS

Dr. Gregor Reid is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, and Surgery at Western University and has an Endowed Chair in Human Microbiome and Probiotics at the Lawson Health Research Institute. He is an inductee into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He was educated at Glasgow University in Scotland (B.Sc. Hons), Massey University in New Zealand (PhD), Monash University in Australia (MBA), and received an Honorary Doctorate from Orebro University in Sweden.

Science Team

Dr. Michael Kuzyk, PhD – Lab Director
Dr. Kuzyk is a biochemist and microbiologist with 20 years broad experience in both academia and industry and hold three patents. His doctoral research in vaccine development at the University of Victoria earned him the Govenor General’s Gold Medal award. Dr Kuzyk has extensive experience in proteomics and mass spectrometry as well as the development of laboratory information management software. A microbiologist-turned-entrepreneur, Dr. Kuzyk is the founder of Category 12 Brewing.








James Humphreys, B.Sc – Professional Chemist

James Humphreys graduated from the University of Victoria with degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry. His extensive experience in personal care product development for clients around the world has allowed him to develop many unique products. He holds three US patents in the field. James is also the co- founder of an award-winning hair care line out of California. With a wealth of experience in biotechnology scale up and operation, James’ contributions are invaluable to the personal care industry.

Hon. James Peterson
Jim as extensive knowledge and first hand experience in government affairs, having served in the Government of Canada as Minister of International Trade, Secretary of State (international financial institutions), and Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance.





Richard Graw
A senior legal counsel with over 35 years experience with corporate, regulatory, and administrative law, Richard Graw is presently Legal Counsel with the Department of Justice Canada. Previously, Mr. Graw was with Transcanada Pipelines Limited and the National Energy Board.


Dr. Kelly Sundberg, PhD
Dr. Sundberg is an Associate Professor, former Academic Chair, and founding member of the SAFE Design Council. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Sundberg served 14 years as an investigator with Canada Border Services Agency, as well as two years in the UN.

Gilbert Sharpe, LL.B, LL.M.

Gilbert is the Former Director of the Legal Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long­Term Care. He holds Professorships at McMaster (Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences) and the University of Toronto (Professor, Faculty of Medicine) and has worked at provincial, federal, and international level on important legal issues and policy matters affecting health care. He also is the President of the Canadian Institute of Law and Medicine and the Editor ­in Chief of Health Law in Canada. Gilbert was involved in supporting US health care reform proposed by Clinton in 1993 and Obama in 2010 and has worked to develop legislation and policies to improve the health care system. He is a member of Ontario Health Quality Council. He also spent 15 years at Fasken Martineau.

Samira El-Hindi
Samira is an independent and successful businesswoman involved with numerous charitable causes and with deep connections in the Middle-East. She is a board member at St. Joseph Healthcare Foundation, where she chairs the Women’s Leadership Council. She is also a board member for Meals On Wheels.

Keyvan Shojania, JD
Keyvan is the Senior Partner at Infinity Law, his major areas of practise are Real Estate Development, Corporate and Commercial Law. Keyvan is a member of the Royal Roads Board of Governors and founding member of the International Institute for Criminal Justice Research, as well as a founding member of the Safe Design council (a building standard for crime resistant buildings).
